A collection of Gaiters, made for the stimuli stressed urbanite and fashionista. It is a tool for reflective walking, transforming the wearer to a disciple, walking a path in mindfulness. The garment is in this case a sign of walking meditation - a form of meditation in action letting the walking be the vehicle for a transformation of the mind. A spiritual journey of embodied knowledge through the Gait.
The gaiters here becomes a insignia of another understanding of the act of walking. Almost as the robes of a monk showing a detachment from the world the gaiters are in this case an artifact symbolizing another perception of the walk - seeing it as a tool for deeper understanding of our existence - as in Zen Buddhist walking meditation it is a walk towards the within.
As most of the experience of dressed identity comes from a visual expression the collection tries to explore a garment that combines a direction in contemporary fashion (of leggings/gaiters) with a more "inner" or physical sensation combined with the process of walking in a mindful manner. What would be the constitution of a fashionable garment that speaks other values - even a tangent to the religious?
The collection was made for the Streif 2005 event in Hardanger, Norway, in april 2005. The Streif was a walk through the cultural landscape and a land art exhibition. As a collaborative design and work process the limited edition gaiters were produced locally at the Dale Shoe factory (Dale Skofabrikk).
